During the residency at S12 I intend to make a series of small theaters for viewing the everyday. These theaters will be based on folding paper theaters made between the 1780’s and 1890’s which featured many layers of flat paper scenery to create depth and perspective. Many were folded like an accordion book so that they were completely flat when closed but could be unfurled to create a detailed scene. My theaters will be built out of clear flameworked glass, using multiple flat sections to create a stage set that appears to recede into the background. When finished, I intend to take them outdoors and use them as framing devices to photograph everyday scenes in an unfamiliar city.
