Mellom_rom – Jonathan Rafael

Jonathan Rafael has been a visiting artist in S12 since the end of October as part of our collaboration with Pilchuck Glass School. This weekend you can see what he has been working on in our gallery. The artist will be present and happy to answer any questions.

Statement:

“Memory can be defined as the mental capacity or faculty of retaining and reviving facts, events, impressions, etc., or of recalling or recognizing previous experiences. Or as the ability of certain materials to return to an original shape after deformation. In a simple study of the phenomenon I seek to understand its basic functions. How do we remember? What do we remember? Can one recall totally events, impressions, and experiences? One thing is for sure, there seem to be worms in the water.”

Jonathan Rafael is semi nomadic, dumpster diving, sculptor of the Duchamp variety. He received his BFA in video and sculpture from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington in 2011. In between attempts to stack tables on chairs Jonathan runs a poetry and prose zine, videographs activities at the Pilchuck Glass School, and cooks and eats till his heart’s content.
