Fallen angels
«Mixed media doesn’t get any more mixed than in the outrageously smart, irresistibly ugly, gloriously provocative work of Einar and Jamex de la Torre.»
Leah Ollman, Special to The Times feb 8, 2008
«Yes is not the typical response to an either/or question, but Einar and Jamex de la Torre prefer not to exclude possibilities if they can help it. Inclusion, especially with all of its messiness and contradictions, is by far their more natural mode – and a more pertinent prism through which to consider their work: Is it glass art, installation, painting, or sculpture? Yes. Are Einar and Jamex Mexican or American? Yes. Are they social critics, historians, pop artists, or conceptualists? Yes. Is their work sensationalistic or is it wise? Yes.»

It is a special honor to have the De la Torre brothers visit S12 and Bergen. Their work has had a lot of exposure in the United States and Mexico. and has been acquired by museums in USA, Germany and Japan. They enjoy working interactively with local communities, and Bergen will be no exception. Even if S12 has not yet established a residency for artists, they will combine their stay in Bergen with an artist in residency in Toulouse, France. They envision the exhibition in Bergen being the first stop on a European tour.
In Bergen the exhibition will be combined with an open workshop where they will use S12s facilities in a way that is open for our curious audience, as well as a day of demonstrating blowing glass. They are eager for the audience to take part in the working process, and envision research in advance and at location in order to include uniquely Norwegian elements in their works.
Their stay is scheduled from the 12th until the 19th of May (including the 17th of May). The exhibition will formally open on the 20th of May and last until the 3rd of July.
We are looking very much forward to meeting the De la Torre brothers, and are proud that they have chosen to visit S12. It will be one of S12s definite highlights.
