In honour of endings and new beginnings S12 is hosting Sol Obscura – a live event performance spanning one of the shortest days** of the year when the Nordic sun is at its lowest. Rhode Island based artist Jocelyne Prince will use the S12 workshop to re-solarize the long hours of darkness with bursts of light. Akin to our ancestors’ winter solstice rituals, the play between light and dark suggests the infinite continuum of beginnings and endings that mark our lives.
To mark S12’s last event at the Skostredet location the public is invited to experience Jocelyne Prince working with glass together with other materials, and projecting it live, accompanied by the sounds of percussionist Owen Weaver from 19:30-21:30. Light refreshments including mulled wine will be served.
**In addition to the public event the S12 gallery windows will host live feed projections that can be seen every hour from the street, beginning December 20 from 15:30 – 23:30 and December 21 from 4:30 – 9:30.
Jocelyne Prince grew up in Saint Boniface, Manitoba. She earned her B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. She exhibits her work in museums and alternative venues across North America, Asia and Europe. She has been awarded the Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching and a George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation Fellowship. Prince is a full-time member of the faculty in Rhode Island School of Design’s Glass Department. She lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island.
Jocelyne Prince is an artist working with the material and the conceptual properties of glass. Her process explores how actions can be recorded through material. Transparency, optical phenomena and projection are key tools that translate these poetic acts into performative events, or into objects that highlight ephemeral occurrences.
Percussionist Owen Weaver’s “intensely focused” (Gramophone) performances combine the forces of rhythm, noise and stillness to seek the musical potential in everyday life. He uses recycled objects, homemade instruments and electronic sounds to construct a kaleidoscopic sound world with a combination of original music, improvisation and collaboration with leading composers of his generation.
He has performed in Europe, South America, Asia and throughout the U.S. with Mantra Percussion, Glenn Branca Ensemble, NEWSPEAK, and others including Conspirare: A Company of Voices for a PBS television special and Grammy-nominated album. A passionate educator, Owen has taught at Yale, Cornell, CalArts, the University of California at Berkeley, Rikers Island Correctional Facility, and New York public schools. In 2018 Owen received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Hartt School.
