Re Cover

Maria Bang Espersen and Max Syron

Glass exploding, cracking or breaking has been visible and audible in S12 during the recent weeks. Those who have visited have felt glass crackle under their shoes, seen bold and beautiful forms being blown or a person’s length reduced to several small artworks.

Friday the 13th of February we open the exhibition Re Cover with Maria Bang Espersen (DK) and Max Syron (USA), who have been in residence at S12 since mid-January. The exhibition has grown from weeks of experimentation with glass in various forms and shapes, making it possible for the audience to follow the process.

Max will be doing a performance with hot glass on the opening night.

Re Cover gives us the opportunity to get to know the work and working methods of the two artists individually, in addition to their collaboration as an artist duo – to which there are great expectations.

The work of Maria Bang Esperesen questions values, freedom and reality. Her approach to glass is experimental and playful and she invents her own techniques rather than following traditions.  In S12 she has, among other things, been exploring stress within glass, and tensions created by a mix of different materials causing seemingly perfect objects to self-destruct.

Max Syron is working with a mixture of installations, performance and (video) documentation of actions.  Max’s work at S12 is focused around the experience of the body and our attempts to understand it. He is using glass to create measurements, traces, and installations to undermine classical standards and truths of the body’s spatial relationships.

Maria Bang Espersen holds numerous awards including Talent Award of the Jutta Cuny-Franz Foundation of 2015, the Jury’s Special Award of the Coburg Prize 2014 and the International Glass Prize 2012. She has studied at the Royal Danish Academy, Bornholm, Denmark from where she graduated in 2012 and Kosta School of Glass in Sweden.  . Max Syron has studied glass at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and has a BFA in sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2013. In 2015 Max and Maria will give classes together at North Lands Creative Glass in Scotland and at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

By the exhibition opening, Max and Maria will primarily have been working with individual projects, they plan to use the remaining time in S12 on developing new things together. These works will find their way into the gallery before they leave S12 on the 26th of February.
