Saman Kalantri (b. 1972, Iran) was an artist in residence at S12 from October until November 2014. The exhibition showcases some of his works made during his stay in Bergen, where he continued his experiments with the Patê de Verre, a technique where “pasta” made by fine grained glass is applied to a form before being burned in the kiln.

Kalantari has a background of both ceramic and glass. In 1992 he started working as a ceramic artist and has participated in several group shows as well as separate exhibitions. After leaving Iran in 2004, he entered a 2-year course held at Vetro Ricerca Glass and Modern in Bolzano in 2005, thereby discovering the potential of working with glass. To Kalantri glass became the right material to convey his lived experience from both Iran and Europe. He has been awarded with several prizes, amongst other the “Bullseye Newcomer Award” in 2008. His work has been published in international magazines such as Glasshouse and Neues Glass.
