Mike Simi came to S12 through the cooperation between S12 and Pilchuck Glass School, where he was selected top ranking student in 2013.
Simi was assisted in the workshop by the artist Alli Hoag. At the end of his residency he exhibited the result of his work while in S12, in the projectroom.
Mike Simi works to create beauty. His artwork is creatively simple and subtly subversive. Sculptures ultimately become troublemakers, denying themselves their original functions while barely able to operate with their new identity. Although confused, these objects continue to push on, working towards a new unknown purpose. Simi recognizes the conflict hidden amongst his works, and believes that conflict can be a form of beauty, a place of honest communication. He has shown recently at the Bellevue Arts Museum, Bellevue, Washington, and the Charlotte Street Foundation LaEsquina Gallery, Kansas City, Missouri. Additional exhibitions include: Threewalls in Chicago, Illinois and a solo exhibition at SEASON, Seattle, Washington, Gettin’ By at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City.
Mike Simi lives in Chicago, Illinois.
