Mary Catherine Richardson was an Artist in Residence for one month in September 2012. She came to S12 right after graduating with an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology, NY. Her project was focused on further developing her graduate work from her MFA Thesis exhibition ‘Specimen’.

“I will be exploring a series of work entitled Inertia, that was included in my thesis show. This piece specifically highlights the inherent qualities found in glass: optics, light, fluidity, form and formlessness, motion, and time. The title was chosen to allude to further development, or that these objects exist only for the moment in which they are experienced.”

In S12 Richardson continued her work on Inertia and created installation from glass drops, mirroring their surroundings. She was experimenting with formability of glass in the workshop as well as reflections and diverse light in her object outside in different corners of Bergen. She was assisted by the artist Teresa Longva while creating her installations. At the end of her residency her work was exhibited in the Project Room during an exhibition called “Being Phases”.

The Bergen based musician/composer Terje Isungset, best known for his music and improvisation using instruments made of ice and of glass, discovered the well sounding glass being made in the S12 studio, and used the opportunity to increase his collection of glass instruments.

Richardson has continued to work with glass  and has worked at the Pilchuck Glass School, Corning Studio School, Penland School of Crafts and Ox-Bow School of Art. In her work she continues to explore material and its presence in space. She incorporates various media including cast iron, ceramic and glass using the inherent qualities of materials and their interactions to comment on personal experience.
